Charadesign choices

Eyes in shape of black beads for the minimalist side of Louis' facial expressions and not to fall into pathos with too realistic eyes;

SSS (skin transparency) almost only on the ears and nose to avoid the wax doll side and to make it look more tactile

size of buttons and fabric patterns exaggerated to give a miniature effect

Realistic Hair to make him more lively and to give him a little messy side that he cannot control

Inspire by Stop Motion puppet

but the intention was not to make a stopmotion film so we adapted this style to 3d

Louis wears two differents outfits to show the opposition between the two schools:

We chose the blue color because this is the official color of autism

His bag represents Louis prersonality with its original opning system and all the pockets that show his organized side

These earrings are in the shape of a star and moon to remind that Louis loves the constellations

Then, The new teacher is a character we see very little but who is very important in our film. She is young and does everything to make Louis feel good in his new school. This is the only character Louis will look into her eyes and she will encourage him to look at others. she in opposition to the old teacher of the old school.

To save time in sculpting, I used the photogrammetry of my clay research to start on a CG base.

In total opposition to the teacher of the new school, she is strict, without colors and she wears gray heeled shoes. The heels are important because they give a sonorous presence to the character and they indicate her personality.

As with all the other characters, the only thing we see of Louis's parents are their shoes. So we had to try to convey the role of these characters through their shoes. The other important thing for parents is their voices during the argument. For the record, these are our own voices (Marion and Théo), we ourselves played the role of Louis's parents!

the mother's shoes were inspired by nurses' shoes, the idea was to represent the work of the parents by their shoes, they belong rather to the working class

Our film contains many characters (16 or 17).

The most important for these characters are their shoes, there are 13 pairs of shoes in all (+ some available in different colors). Each character is identifiable by their shoes, we wanted the shoes to represent the personality of characters.

The challenge was to try to make shoes that were very different from each other but that remained consistent in term of style. It was a lot of fun to find the shoes models and adapt them to our style.
